English Idioms from A-Z

Hair Of The Dog

The idiom "hair of the dog" means to drink alcohol to cure a hangover. It comes from an old belief that if a dog bites you, you should put some of its hair on the wound to cure it. So, if you had too much alcohol the night before and wake up feeling sick, some people believe that drinking a small amount of alcohol the next day can help you feel better.

You can use this idiom when you or someone you know has a hangover and needs a quick remedy. For example, "I had too much to drink last night, but I'm going to have a hair of the dog to help me feel better." However, it's important to note that this is not a medically recommended cure for a hangover and can actually make things worse in the long run. It's always best to drink responsibly and in moderation.
